Black Mark Recognition Technology

KINGCOLOR Barrier-Free Black Mark Tech

In automated ticket dispensing and printing applications, black marks serve as the positioning reference for the equipment. Photoelectric sensors are highly sensitive to ink reflectance, paper substrates and print-edge tolerances. Even small variations can cause paper jams, misalignment or frequent error alerts. KINGCOLOR’s proprietary Barrier-Free Black Mark Technology combines a nano-carbon black mark ink formulation, printing tolerances within ±0.3 mm and spectral matching. It addresses optical sensing errors at the source and delivers 99.99% error-free dispensing across banking terminals, self-service kiosks and automated logistics lines.

How It Works ?
Nano-Carbon Absorption Engineering
Conventional inks may produce glare or insufficient absorption under infrared and near-infrared light. Our dedicated black mark ink uses high-purity nano-carbon black particles to achieve over 99.5% light absorption at wavelengths of 850 nm and 940 nm. This creates a strong contrast against the white paper substrate and significantly reduces false readings by photoelectric sensors.
Spectral Reflectance Calibration
Designed for both transmissive and reflective sensors, our Print Contrast Signal (PCS) control is based on a reflectance attenuation model. It maintains a clear reflectance difference between black marks and unprinted areas, eliminating recognition errors caused by variations in paper grammage, thickness and light transmission.
Micron-Level Printing Precision
Our fully servo-controlled high-speed printing lines keep black mark edge burrs at the micron level and maintain mark-pitch tolerances within ±0.3 mm. Clean, sharply defined mark edges ensure fast and stable sensor pulse triggering, preventing premature or delayed cutting.
Industry Challenges & Solutions
Traditional Industry Challenges KINGCOLOR Tech Solutions
Sensor Failures & Frequent Error Alerts
After paper rolls from different batches are loaded, photoelectric sensors may fail to detect the black marks, causing the equipment to stop or issue error alerts.
Multi-Spectral Waveband Compatibility
Optimized for infrared sensing wavelengths including 850 nm and 940 nm, achieving a 99.99% black mark detection rate with zero false sensor alerts.
Misalignment & Content Displacement
Accumulated mark-pitch tolerances or blurred edges can cause misaligned print, incorrectly positioned perforations, or QR codes to be cut.
±0.3mm Ultra-Tight Tolerance Control
Precisely controls the relative position of black marks, perforations and cut lines, ensuring accurate print alignment and clean cuts without damaging important information.
Poor Compatibility Across Mixed Fleet
Branches may use equipment from different brands, including NCR, Diebold and GRG Banking. Ordinary black mark paper may not work reliably across all models, increasing procurement costs.
Universal Multi-Brand Hardware Adaptability
Standardized physical and optical parameters allow one paper roll specification to work with mainstream printing modules, reducing inventory management costs.
High-Speed Paper Slippage & Pulse Skipping
During continuous high-speed dispensing in ATMs or queue kiosks, unstable web tension or black mark slippage can cause missed sensor signals and paper jams.
Anti-Slip Web Tension & Smooth Pulse Triggering
Precise roll tension control and clean black mark edges help prevent missed sensor signals and paper jams during continuous high-speed feeding.

Primary Application Scenarios
Banking Kiosks & ATMs
Engineered for ATM withdrawal receipts, transfer vouchers and queue tickets. It reduces downtime and the need for on-site paper-jam maintenance in 24/7 unattended banking environments, helping branches maintain reliable service availability.
Transit & Event Ticketing
Suitable for high-speed rail and airport ticket kiosks, horse-racing tickets, cinema tickets and anti-counterfeit admission tickets for tourist attractions. It ensures accurate printing position and cutting during high-frequency ticket dispensing and under changing outdoor lighting conditions.
Industrial & Logistics Labeling
Suitable for e-commerce shipping-label printers and high-speed automatic label applicators. Black marks on the release liner provide positioning references, ensuring accurate label peeling and application as the liner moves through the equipment at millisecond-level speeds.
Frequently Asked Questions
1
Our equipment uses a non-standard infrared sensor, and ordinary black mark paper frequently causes error alerts. Can you provide a compatible solution?
Yes. Please provide your equipment model and technical specifications, or send us the sensor module for testing. Our optical laboratory can identify the sensor wavelength within 48 hours and customize a matching black mark ink and paper solution to ensure 100% recognition.
2
Why do some black marks look dark to the eye, yet machines still fail to read them?
Visible blackness does not equal infrared absorption. Human eyes see visible light at wavelengths of 400–700 nm, while machine sensors operate in infrared bands such as 850 nm and 940 nm. Ordinary black inks may reflect infrared light and create sensor blind spots. KINGCOLOR uses specialized nano-carbon inks with over 99.5% infrared absorption.
3
Is the black mark printed on the front or back? What are the standard rules for size and positioning?
It depends on the location of your printer’s sensor. Equipment with an upper sensor requires marks on the front, while equipment with a lower sensor requires marks on the back. Black mark width generally ranges from 3 mm to 10 mm. We adjust the exact size, pitch, position and printing side according to your equipment manual.
4
If we pre-print colorful bank logos or ads on the black-mark paper, will it interfere with sensor recognition?
No. During prepress artwork preparation, we reserve a Sensor Keep-Out Zone around the black mark. This keeps background colors, text and logos out of the sensor scanning path and prevents false triggering at the layout stage.
5
For high-volume orders, how do you ensure consistent optical performance across production batches?
We create a dedicated record of each customer’s dedicated ink formulation and paper substrate. During mass production, our online CCD vision system monitors black mark quality, and samples are tested against fixed Print Contrast Signal (PCS) reference values to ensure 100% consistent optical performance across annual production batches.
