Custom Printed Thermal Paper Guide

How To Customize Your Thermal Paper

Choose the printing side, confirm the artwork and check the finished roll before bulk production.

Quick Answer

Custom thermal paper printing allows logos, text, forms and promotional designs to be preprinted on the thermal or non-thermal side for different receipt and ticket applications. Quality results require sharp text and graphics, accurate colors and positioning, and good ink adhesion while preserving normal thermal printing. Thermal-side artwork should work with the information printed during use, while back printing can carry branding and additional information.

What Is Custom Printed Thermal Paper and How Does It Work

Custom thermal paper printing involves preprinting logos, text, forms or promotional designs on the thermal or non-thermal side before converting the paper into finished rolls. Single-color or multicolor preprinting creates branded receipts and tickets or layouts designed for specific business needs.

During use, the printer’s thermal head heats the coating to produce variable information such as dates, amounts and transaction details without ink or ribbon. Preprinting provides the fixed artwork, while thermal printing adds the actual business information.

How to Choose the Right Printing Option

Choose the printing side according to where the fixed content needs to appear. Then check the quality of the finished artwork and its compatibility with your printer.

Printing on the Thermal Side

Choose thermal-side preprinting when fixed artwork and variable printer output need to appear on the same side.

• Branding: preprint a logo, brand name or other fixed identifiers.

• Fixed layouts: preprint forms, field names or ticket frames, with the printer adding the corresponding information.

• Typical applications: bank receipts, cinema tickets, admission tickets and boarding passes.

• Layout requirements: align the artwork with the printer output and avoid obscuring variable information such as dates, amounts or seat numbers.

Preprinted forms and identifiers share the thermal side with variable printer output.

Printing on the Non-Thermal Side

Choose reverse-side printing for supplementary content that does not need to align with transaction information.

• Brand information: print contact details, brand messages or promotional graphics.

• Marketing content: include offers, membership guidance or QR codes.

• Service information: add return policies, terms of use or instructions.

• Typical applications: retail, restaurant and hotel receipts, as well as tickets with additional information on the reverse. The thermal side remains available for normal printing.

Repeated reverse-side artwork may not align with every cut receipt because transaction lengths vary. Confirm the repeat spacing and minimum readable text size at the finished paper width.

Reverse-side printing carries supplementary information while the thermal side records transactions.

Printing on Both Sides

Both sides can be preprinted when the product needs a fixed layout and supplementary information. For example, the thermal side may carry a logo and form fields, while the reverse carries promotional content or terms. Confirm the artwork on both sides and test that the finished roll still feeds and prints normally.

Check the Finished Print Quality

• Text and graphic clarity: logos, small text and form lines should be sharp. Test any QR codes for scanning.

• Color and registration: colors should meet the approved requirements, and multicolor artwork should be aligned without obvious misregistration.

• Layout and position: confirm artwork direction, spacing and placement. Thermal-side preprinting should work with the subsequent printer output.

• Ink adhesion: check for smearing, ink transfer and surface contamination.

• Thermal printing performance: after custom printing, transaction text and barcodes should remain clear and readable.

What to Confirm Before Ordering

Confirm the roll specifications and artwork before production, then verify the printed sample using the intended equipment.

Sample Check

• Digital proof: check the content, layout, artwork direction and print position. Bulk production starts only after approval.

• Physical sample: check actual print colors, clarity, thermal image quality and printer compatibility.

• Preprinted forms: verify that the printer places variable information in the correct fields.

• Reverse-side printing: check the back print and normal thermal printing on the front, including feeding and any ink transfer.

Back Printed Receipt Rolls for an African Supermarket

An African supermarket customer selected 80 × 80 mm thermal receipt rolls with single-color reverse-side printing for fixed brand and service information. The thermal side remained available for transaction details. The customer specified the roll, core and thermal-side orientation and required approval of a digital preview before bulk production.

Storage and Handling Tips

Heat, light, moisture and chemical contact can affect the thermal coating, causing unused paper to discolor or printed information to lose contrast. Follow the selected paper grade’s storage instructions.

• Keep rolls in a cool, dry area. A practical storage target is 20–25°C with 40–60% relative humidity, subject to the paper grade’s instructions.

• Avoid direct sunlight, prolonged strong light and locations near heaters or other heat sources. Keep unused rolls in protective packaging and reseal opened packs.

• Store cartons on dry pallets, away from damp floors and condensation. Avoid excessive stacking and pressure that can deform rolls or damage packaging.

• Keep paper away from solvents, oils, alcohol and plasticized PVC. Check adhesives, tapes and other contacting materials for compatibility.

• Handle paper with clean, dry hands and avoid rubbing the thermal surface. Do not heat-laminate printed thermal receipts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What affects the price of custom printed thermal paper?

The price depends on the paper grade, roll specifications, order quantity, one-sided or double-sided printing, print colors, artwork coverage and packaging. Confirm any plate-making or printing setup charges in the quotation.

Q: Will the printed colors look exactly like the digital proof?

Not necessarily. Screen settings, paper and printing conditions can affect color appearance. If color matching is important, provide a Pantone reference or physical sample and confirm the result with a printed sample rather than the screen alone.

Q: Do I need a different printer to use custom printed thermal paper?

Usually not, provided the paper grade, roll dimensions, core and thermal-side orientation match your printer. Thermal-side preprinting must also align with the printer output. Test a finished sample roll to confirm clear printing and smooth feeding.
